Matching formidable technical prowess – part-rooted in her classical training – with finely-seasoned traditional craft, multi-instrumentalist and singer Megan Henderson, of acclaimed Highland quintet Breabach, is one of Scotland’s most in-demand musicians. Tonight’s headline appearance launches her debut solo album Pilgrim Souls, originally premiered to rapturous applause as a New Voices commission at Celtic Connections 2019. Inspired by Highland artist Christine Clark’s dream-like, impressionistic paintings – which feature as a projected backdrop – it’s performed by an ensemble including fiddles, Hardanger fiddle, cello, mandolin, harmonium, piano and vocals.
Genre-blurring singer and songwriter Ainsley Hamill’s debut album, 2021’s Not Just Ship Land draws on contrastingly urban inspirations, namely the social history and contemporary experience of Glasgow’s Govan district, especially as viewed by its womenfolk. A mix of original songs with settings of others’ words, it centres Hamill’s powerfully alluring voice amid an assured, arresting mix of folk, jazz and torch-song pop, accompanied for this live performance by film footage of Govan past and present.
