Any modern city will have hundreds of histories intertwined at any given time. These histories are dominated by who has the voice to speak.
Glasgow during the Iraq War. A young couple fighting for their lives in a city riven by poverty, gentrification, boredom and sin. Through nostalgic storytelling and historical observations, Exiles dissects ways in which history shapes our past and predetermines our future, with often devastating consequences. Victoria McNulty’s evocative performance is intertwined with specially filmed segments that transform this story.
Raised in the East End of Glasgow, Victoria McNulty is a celebrated voice in Scottish spoken word. She is the recent winner of Scots Writer O the Year at the 2021 Scots Language Awards. Her work illuminates facets of working-class life often neglected by contemporary performance art. Victoria describes Exiles as “a eulogy for a forgotten city and a caution for a future that is already here”.
Exiles is directed by acclaimed spoken word artist Kevin P. Gilday and award-winning film-maker David Hayman Jr. Music by singer-songwriter Calum Baird. Produced by Stephen Wright at Fair Pley.
