The films range from the joyous salute to the power of music in Casablanca Beats, and Khadar Ayderus Ahmed’s multi award-winning Djibouti-set The Gravedigger's Wife, to feature documentaries Once Upon A Time in Uganda, Blind Ambition, and I Am Samuel which follows a young gay Kenyan couple over five years, as they commit to each other despite the danger and hardship they face.
It's difficult to speak about African Cinema without also recognising the influence of the continent's long and troubled history with colonial powers. Both Sarah Maldoror's 1972 film, Sambizanga, and 2021 film, Héliopolis focus on the struggle for independence in Angola and Algeria, while the ghost of apartheid is at the core of Good Madam, Jenna Cato Bass's South African, satirical horror.
This programme of films combines to provide a taste of a vital and booming filmmaking continent.
Films in the African Stories programme:
• Héliopolis (2021)
• Good Madam (2021)
• Casablanca Beats (Haut et fort) (2021)
• The Gravedigger's Wife (Guled & Nasra) (2021)
• Sambizanga (1972)
• Once Upon a Time in Uganda (2021)
