Singer-songwriter James Bay started out via the tried and trusted method of open mic nights, primarily around his uni in Brighton and later in London. His skills duly honed, Bay found a wider audience via some high-profile support slots with kindred spirits such as Tom Odell and Kodaline, leading to him getting signed to Republic/Universal in 2012.
The behatted Bay was an almost instant success, his warm folk-soul sound and husky voice finding a place with fans of other contemporary troubadours such as Ed Sheeran and Hozier. His second single Let It Go went to No. 10 in the UK singles chart in 2014, a feat outdone later that year by its successor Hold Back The River, which peaked at No.2 in the UK and went to No.1 in Ireland.
Bay’s 2015 debut album, Chaos And The Calm, continued his impressive track record, reaching No.1 in both the UK and Ireland and entering the US Top 20. The following year, Bay won Best British Solo Artist at the BRIT Awards and was nominated for three Grammys.
A busy year was rounded out with Bay covering The Beatles on Netflix’s Beat Bugs and Tom Petty for the film Cars 3. He returned in 2018 with his second album Electric Light, which peaked at No.2 in the UK album charts and found Bay exploring a more eclectic range. The song Us, taken from the album, was later released as a duet with Alicia Keys.
In 2020, Bay released the single Chew On My Heart, taken from his upcoming album. He performed the song from the top of the London Eye for The Late Late Show With James Corden.
