Bookface has attracted more than 2000 members worldwide. The brainchild of environmentalist and avid reader Heather Suttie, this private Facebook and online book group shares only great recommendations of every genre for every bookworm.
Heather’s monthly, sustainable book-swap brunch invites a selected author to share their writing experience in the cosy confines of Glasgow’s restaurant/bar Glaschu. Authors Doug Allan, Sophie Gravia, Sam Baker and Lisa Gray are some of the personalities who’ve talked about their writing journeys to the intimate and captivated audience.
September kicks off the new season with guest author and adventurer Guy Grieve. He’ll talk about how his book Call of the Wild: My Escape to Alaska came to be with leading journalist Kat Tweedie. Following their 30-minute Q&A, the audience is free to ask questions. Then it’s Prosecco time, brunch, and the chance to purchase a signed copy of Guy’s book.
Guy Grieve's life was going nowhere. Commuting 2,000 miles a month to get to a job he hated and up to his neck in debt, he dreamed of escaping it all – to live alone in one of the most wild and remote places on earth: Alaska.
Just when he'd given up, his dream came true and he was there.
Miles away from the nearest human being, and armed with basic tools to build a cabin (from scratch), hunt, ice fish and dodge bears (in the buff), he realised life in the wilderness was anything but easy.
Part Ray Mears, part Bill Bryson, Call of the Wild is the gripping story of how a mild-mannered commuter struggled with the elements – and himself – and eventually learned the ways of the wild.
The morning starts with attendees arriving for 9.30 am to drop off four books for the book swap. Tea and coffee will be served before the Q+A. After a Prosecco, a French classic Lillet cocktail and brunch, they leave with four ‘new’ books. The event winds up at 12.30pm.
Guy Grieve is the latest in a line-up of guests which include authors Doug Allan, Maggie Ritchie and Lisa Gray. Forthcoming guests Kaye Adams, Ryan O’Connor and Sophie Gravia.
Bookface Book Swap Brunch is on the first Saturday of every month.
