Join Glasgow Chamber Choir for an evening of vibrant and varied music inspired by the soundscape of the Americas. At the centre of the programme is Aaron Copland’s In the Beginning – a dramatic and rarely-heard setting of the Creation story, blending rich choral writing with a solo mezzo-soprano voice and Copland’s unmistakable musical colour.
Alongside this, the concert takes listeners on a musical journey across the continents. From Mexico’s colonial past, Juan de Padilla’s Missa Ego flos campi offers the intricate beauty and serenity of Renaissance polyphony, while Heitor Villa-Lobos brings a burst of rhythmic energy and Brazilian warmth. Eric Whitacre’s luminous harmonies capture the spirit of contemporary American choral writing, and Herbert Howells’ Take him, earth, for cherishing – composed in memory of President John F. Kennedy – adds a touch of heartfelt reflection from across the Atlantic.
Come and hear a concert that celebrates the diversity and creativity of choral music across the Americas – from Renaissance Mexico to modern-day Manhattan – all in the resonant surroundings of St Bride’s Episcopal Church.
