How We Are: Exploring the Parent Self through Victorian Puzzle Purses

About How We Are: Exploring the Parent Self through Victorian Puzzle Purses

How do we speak to ourselves? What do we share with friends? How do we face the world? Craft messages of care & strength with Puzzle Purses.

Trying to conceive, pregnancy, expecting & parenting can be hard! How often do you have time for self-reflection, to sit down, write and make, or to just take a beat?

Join artist and founder of Kinfolk Families, Rebecca Livesey-Wright for a restful couple of hours of gentle making and writing.

Victorian Puzzle Purses are made using an intricate, but easy to learn paper folding technique which results in 3 layers of presentation. We'll use this as a basis to explore 3 layers of self: how we see ourselves, how we show up for our friends and family, and how we present to the rest of the world.
Rebecca will guide you with gentle writing techniques to prompt messages for the Puzzle Purses. They will then teach you the folding method and finally support you to decorate and adorn your Purse which you will take home with you.

PLUS, all attendees get at 15% discount from our magazine and bookshop - items will be available to buy on the day.

Who Is The Workshop For?
You do not need to be an artist or a writer to attend this workshop! Rebecca will help you at each stage (and we have some pre-folded Purses if you find the folding tricky!)

'How We Are' has been programmed as part of SaltSpace Gallery's motherhood exhibition. SaltSpace is in-line with Kinfolk Families' definition of motherhood which is gender-inclusive and expansive, including all who identify or feel an affinity with motherhood and/or experience gendered parenting expectations. This includes non-binary people, trans men & trans women, step-mums, non-birth-giving/carrying mothers, bereaved mothers, surrogate mothers, adoptive mothers & those who have experienced pregnancy loss.

Kinfolk Families' work is underpinned by matricentric feminism, queer theory, and neurodivergent practice.

About Rebecca
Rebecca has over 10 years experience in facilitating creative workshops across a range of techniques. In 2024, after many years of independent research and curatorial practice, they launched Kinfolk Families CIC, a project making space for marginalised parents and caregivers through, and in, the arts. Having started their parenting journey at 24 as a single, solo person, their work and approach grows out of their lived experience. They live in Glasgow with their kid and wife - together they make a fully neurodivergent family!

About SaltSpace
SaltSpace is a Glasgow-based creative co-operative that provides a supportive stepping stone to launch new graduates and early-career creatives toward their artistic careers. As of 2025 and beyond, SaltSpace operates out of two locations: a new Gallery Space on Albert Road, and the Makers Space, located in a beautiful converted factory along the River Clyde.

Accessibility
Although the workshop will be gentle and relaxed, the themes may activate emotional responses. We will be using the Main Gallery Space for the workshop. Room 2 can be used as a break-out space, but please note, it does not have a door.

The venue has a toilet, however the hallway which leads to it is narrow - 86cm (33”) wide.

For a full venue description, please see SaltSpace Gallery's Accessibility Guide (available at registration link).

For photos and a floor plan of the space, please see SaltSpace Gallery's Contents and Empty Gallery Images (available at registration link).
