Let's meet for share the beauty of tango ♥
The aim is to make tango accessible to everyone and through dancing tango improve health and happiness. Tango can enrich the mind, body and spirit and allows individuals to express themselves and communicate with others and have fun in a positive, social and integrated atmosphere.
Who we are?
East Dunbartonshire Tango Community is an initiative led by Argentine Tango teachers and dancers Louise Davidson from Glasgow, Selen and Ozgur Yilmaz from Istanbul and Ariel Sanchez from Buenos Aires and Alenka Jelen-Sanchez from Slovenia. These experienced teachers are assisted by tango event organiser and dancer Hunter Reid from Milngavie. The initiative is currently based at Milngavie Sports Club.
How we came together?
The idea of forming a tango community in East Dunbartonshire was sparked off by Louise and Hunter by inviting Selen and Ozgur and Ariel and Alenka to come together to form a Tango Community in East Dunbartonshire. Louise assisted by Hunter have been running classes at Milngavie Sports Club and Selen and Ozgur had been running classes at the Waitrose Community Room in Milngavie while Ariel and Alenka run the YirajeTango initiative in Stirling.
What we love about tango dancing?
The philosophy of the group is to encourage local people of all ages to come together to explore tango beyond sets and routines and enjoy the benefits of participating in this wonderful dance, the essence of which is a language of communication through music and body movements. No experience of tango or other dance is necessary to join the group and you do not need to come with a partner.
Where we will meet?
Classes will be held weekly on Thursday evenings at Milngavie Sports Club in Auchenhowie Road from 7pm to 8pm and the teachers will rotate to enable slightly different yet complimentary approaches to dancing Argentine Tango.
What is the cost?
The cost will be £8 per class with £6 for consessions. In addition to this, practice sessions will be organised for the tango community and Selen and Ozgur will continue their current tango sessions at Waitrose in Milngavie raising funds for Glasgow Children's Hospital Charity.
Meet the team
The teachers have a wealth of experience in dancing and teaching – Louise has taught at Dance House in Glasgow and run a dance studio in New York. Selen is owner ofJoimovee, international community dance company and together with Ozgur has run their own dance studio in Istanbul and Ariel and Alenka run their own studioYirajeTangoo at the Yoga Tree in Stirling. Hunter, who is a county tennis player and has coached tennis in Austria and Monte Carlo is convinced that tango has made him much more aware of the importance of balance and this has contributed to him winning Scottish National Tennis Titles for his age group.
