The two consecutive Saturday events culminated with a spectacular Carnival Narrowboat Flotilla which made its way in festival procession along the iconic Forth & Clyde Canal waterway in the north of the city.
Glasgow Canal Days Out, hosted by Glasgow Canal Co-op, received support as part of Scotland’s Year of Coasts and Waters. Events also coincided with Glasgow’s Doors Open Days Festival on Saturday 18th September and Climate Fringe Week.
The events, which took place at canalside venues between Firhill Basin and Port Dundas on Saturday 18th and Saturday 25th September, were made possible by the support of The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Scotland’s Year of Coasts and Waters 20/21, Sustrans, Scotland’s Events Recovery Fund, The National Lottery Community Fund, Scottish Canals, Glasgow City Council Stalled Spaces and Paths for All.
Sustrans and Paths for All supported the event to host a series of led cycle rides and guided walking tours. A key focus of the event was to showcase the role that the canal plays in providing active travel options for local people through new pathways, routes, and green spaces around the Hamiltonhill Claypits Nature Reserve.
Anna Young, Project Manager at Glasgow Canal Co-op, said: “We were thrilled to see so many visitors to the canal area over the two Saturday events. Our Canal Festival was cancelled in 2020 due to Covid-19 restrictions, so it was brilliant to welcome everyone back to celebrate all that is great about the Glasgow Canal.
“The Canal Days Out programme really brought our local community together through a wide-ranging mix of free activities including skateboarding lessons at The Loading Bay Skatepark, taster kayaking sessions at Pinkston Water sports and Pop-Up performances from Scottish Opera. There was a focus on exploring our local environment through cycling and walking with support from Free Wheel North and the new Civic Street Bike for Good Hub. A highlight for all was the Carnival Flotilla which brought the creative skills of Carnival Arts Yard together with the Glasgow Narrowboaters Community to create a unique spectacle of large-scale floating artworks accompanied by live music. “We are grateful for the support provided by our funders, including those who play The National Lottery, and participating organisations to make these two, day events a success.”
Claire Daly, SUSTRANS SCOTLAND, said: “We were delighted to lend our support and be a part this fantastic community event.
“With so many people turning out, it was a great opportunity for us to demonstrate the benefits of active travel and show just how easy it can be to walk or cycle to get around. And fun too!
“Ahead of Glasgow hosting COP26, it is an important message for each of us that choosing active travel options rather than driving are practical steps many of us can take to reduce pollution.”
