The Citizens Theatre is getting set to unveil the final space in its transformational seven-year redevelopment, its new multi-purpose 150 seat Studio Theatre. It allows the Citz to accommodate more performances than ever before and champion a new generation of emerging theatre makers. The adaptable and accessible new space ensures that whether working, coming to take part or attending a show, everybody can access the space. And it also provides a great training space for people learning the technical skills to go into a career in theatre.
The opening production in the Studio Theatre is Young Co’s Close.
Close takes audiences on a journey back to the legendary Close Theatre Club, in a script developed by Young Co with support from Jenny Knotts, whose time researching the famous club brought so many brilliant stories to light.
The Close Theatre Club back in the 60s and 70s was a café, a nightclub, the city’s first unofficial gay bar, and the only place in Glasgow you could get a drink after 10pm on a Sunday. It was a place where the rules were broken, where art met rebellion, and where the impossible became possible.
It remains an inspiration. The Young Co springboards from its research into the past, to look to the future and what ideas need to be shared with a new audience today.
There is also an additional event Up Close which is a special gathering to celebrate the Close Theatre Club, on 10 October.
It is followed later this month, on Wednesday 22 October by the Citizens Community Collective’s Making Your Mark.
Making Your Mark is a story about choice, and how powerful it can be when people come together. In a world where democracy feels fragile, and the challenges we all face seem almost impossible, it explores how we can create a sense of hope.
Making your Mark has been created by The Story Room - a group of Community Collective members who meet on Friday mornings to share ideas, create characters and develop scripts. It is the longest-running Participate group at the Citz having started in 1999.
Tickets are available for both productions now at citz.co.uk
More Studio Theatre productions will be announced on Wednesday 5 November.
Catrin Evans, Participate Director, Citizens Theatre, said: “It’s incredibly special to open the Studio Theatre with work from our long-standing Participate groups. This space is all about possibility - a place to experiment, take creative risks, and develop bold ideas. This new, accessible, state-of-the-art studio marks an exciting next step for the Citz, and we can’t wait to share it with everyone.”
