Scottish distributor Conic has acquired all UK and Ireland rights for Everybody to Kenmure Street.
In May 2021, a UK Home Office dawn raid triggered one of the most spontaneous and successful acts of civil resistance in recent memory. In Pollokshields, one of Scotland’s most diverse neighbourhoods, hundreds of residents rushed to the streets to stop the deportation of their neighbours.
The eight-hour stand-off in the Southside of Glasgow made international headlines as the community organised itself to buy time for more people to join their peaceful protest.
The film will have its world premiere in January at the Sundance Film Festival where it screens on day one of the festival, as part of the World Cinema Documentary Competition.
The film is directed by Felipe Bustos Sierra using crowd-sourced footage from the day along with archive film and set-designed scenes captured by cinematographer Kirstin McMahon, featuring actors, relaying verbatim the testimonies of contributors who wished to remain anonymous.
Two-time Oscar® winner Emma Thompson, who acted as an executive producer on the documentary, said in a statement: “Everybody to Kenmure Street beautifully and powerfully demonstrates the innate and deep decency of our people whilst also highlighting the institutional mannerisms and structures that are the opposite of this.
“It’s a documentary about what we as society often do not see, but what we can do when we do see it. I’m excited to be supporting Felipe with this urgent film.”
Felipe Bustos Sierra is a Chilean-Belgian filmmaker based in Scotland with Debasers Filums. His debut feature-length documentary, Nae Pasaran (2018), won the Best Feature award at the 2018 BAFTA Scotland Awards. Bustos Sierra is an alumnus of the Eurodoc, Berlinale Talent Campus, the Independent Filmmaker Programme, and the EIFF Talent Lab. Everybody to Kenmure Street is his second feature.
Director Felipe Bustos Sierra said: “Like the day it documents, this film has been a baton relay race made of many fragments reflecting the unhappy times we live in and the resilient stance of the many who rise to make a change. I am grateful for all our contributors and crew whose patience, dedication and talent have allowed us to bring this film to the screen, and excited to share it with audiences very soon.”
The film is edited by Colin Monie who first collaborated with Bustos Sierra on Nae Pasaran. Barry Burns of Mogwai is composing the original score and frequent collaborator Jack Coghill is the sound designer. It’s produced by Ciara Barry of Glasgow-based production company, barry crerar in association with Bustos Sierra through Debasers Filums. Emma Thompson is an executive producer, along with Mark Thomas for Screen Scotland.
Producer Ciara Barry said: “Everybody to Kenmure Street is a hopeful film that celebrates the power of community. In an increasingly divided world where many feel disenfranchised, it allows us to believe in our collective agency to enact change.
“This film is deeply personal to us, as residents of the Glasgow community where the film is set, and participants of the protest on the day, we are excited to share this film with international audiences and are proud to celebrate its message”.
The film was supported by Screen Scotland and by a successful Kickstarter campaign and Scottish trade unions.
Everybody to Kenmure Street will be released in the UK and Ireland in Spring 2026.
