The work launches as part of Call & Response , the Studio’s major creative initiative pairing leading cultural figures with its Master Printmakers to create original fine art editions.
A digital image with additional screenprinted elements in gold, St. Parduman of Glasgow is a deeply personal tribute to Kohli’s late father, Parduman Singh Kohli, and a meditation on belonging - what it means to choose Glasgow, and to be embraced in return. The work celebrates migrant lives in Scotland and affirms the value of inclusion at a time of rising racism and social division.
Reimagining his father through the visual language of sainthood, Kohli explains: “Why not St Mungo? Why not reimagine my dad as St Mungo?” He continues, “I wanted it to look as Glaswegian as possible. I wanted it to be a gable end. I wanted it to be a mural.”
Sanjeev’s parents emigrated from India to the UK in 1966 and established themselves in Glasgow in the early seventies. His father was widely loved and respected, a fundamental part of the local community. Sanjeev recalls how moved he was when his father was described as “an adopted son of Glasgow” at his funeral in 2024.
In response, Kohli felt compelled to create a work that honours those who choose to become part of Scotland and the value, dignity, and love they contribute to the places they call home. At its heart is a message of welcome. Reflecting on his father’s arrival in Scotland, Kohli shares: “I asked him, when did you feel at home in Scotland? He replied, ‘About 20 minutes after I got here.’ I didn’t fully understand what people were saying to me, but I felt welcome.”
The image was developed collaboratively between Sanjeev Kohli and Glasgow Print Studio Master Printer Murray Robertson. Kohli provided the original concept, photographs, and scans, which Robertson carefully layered and fused into a coherent, richly detailed collage that realises Kohli’s vision.
Echoing the format of a traditional ikon, the composition resonates with both religious iconography and the visual language of Glasgow and its patron saint, Saint Mungo. The sandstone tenement gable-end forms a striking backdrop, merging the sacred and the everyday cityscape. The central figure’s robes reference both traditional icon painting and 17th-century Mughal miniatures, detailed with antique Paisley patterning - a visual bridge between Scottish and South Asian heritage. Symbols from Glasgow’s coat of arms - the bird, the bell, the fish, and the tree - are all present, reflecting the life and legends of St. Mungo.
Binding the work together is the phrase “I Belong to Glasgow,” presented in English - using script from the original 1920 Will Fyffe songsheet - and in Punjabi, shown in both Gurmukhi script and English transliteration. As Kohli reflects, “It’s also nice to be able to write the words ‘I belong to Glasgow’ in Punjabi script. I don’t think I’ve seen that before.” The layering of languages mirrors the layered identities at the heart of the piece.
Sanjeev Kohli is one of Scotland’s most recognisable cultural figures. Best known for his role as shopkeeper Navid Harrid in the BBC’s award-winning sitcom Still Game , he was co-writer and co-star of Fags, Mags and Bags and has written for Chewin’ the Fa t and Goodness Gracious Me . Born in London and raised in Glasgow to Sikh parents who moved from India in the 1960s, Kohli often draws on his experience as a proud “Glaswasian” in his work.
Kohli’s edition of St. Parduman of Glasgow is available in a limited run of 50, priced at £200, and will be sold exclusively through Glasgow Print Studio’s gallery and online shop.
This release marks the next chapter in Call & Response - a major creative initiative bringing together leading figures from Scotland’s music, fashion, theatre, literature, design and broadcast sectors to create original fine art prints in collaboration with Glasgow Print Studio’s Master Printmakers.
Participants include Peter Capaldi, Alan Cumming, Franz Ferdinand, Greg Hemphill & Julie Wilson Nimmo, Ashley Jensen, Sanjeev Kohli, The Pastels, and Kirsty Wark, with more to be announced.
