The Wee Write Family Day on Saturday 7 March at The Mitchell Library features a packed programme of 20 events tailored to age groups ranging from babies and toddlers to young adults.
All the sessions share a common goal: to encourage the next generation to get reading so they experience the joy and imaginative power of stories, and enjoy the benefits a lasting love of books brings.
From storytelling sessions and crafts, to workshops and interactive events with acclaimed authors and illustrators, the Wee Write Family Day offers something for all ages. Tales of daring adventures, magical worlds and lots more are in store to excite young readers.
Highlights of the Wee Write Family Day include Bookbug sessions for little ones, a fantasy writing workshop for older children with award-winning author Patrice Lawrence, and an event focused on the writing debut of Dougie Payne from Scottish indie rock band Travis – Poochie Pete and His Very Big Feet.
Glasgow Life Head of Libraries and Communities, Alana Ward said: “We’re committed to engaging with young audiences to inspire a love of reading that will continue throughout their lives; we know how significant and long-term the benefits are.
“Wee Write is all about generating interest and excitement in storytelling from the earliest years of childhood, so we’re delighted to be helping open doors to the world of books by staging so many fun events for children and young people at our Family Day.”
As part of Wee Write 2026, an outreach programme is also taking place from 2 - 6 March for pupils in local schools and at a number of Glasgow Life venues including city libraries, community facilities and the Emirates Arena. All the events and activities are designed to instill a lifelong love of reading in Glasgow’s children, spark young imaginations, and support a deeper understanding of a wide range of topical subjects.
Wee Write is the ‘younger sister’ of Aye Write – Glasgow’s acclaimed and much-loved book festival. Its last edition, from 6 - 16 November 2025, marked the 20th anniversary of the highly popular celebration of books. Spanning a range of literary genres and featuring 130 events showcasing established authors and the next generation of writers, the 2025 festival included discussions and debates featuring 180 authors from Glasgow, Scotland and around the world.
Produced and delivered by Glasgow Life - the charity which leads culture, events and active living in Glasgow to support wellbeing, Aye Write and Wee Write are supported by Creative Scotland, which has committed funding to the Glasgow literary festivals for three years.
Beth Cochrane, Literature Officer at Creative Scotland, said: “Wee Write and its family-friendly day of entertaining and educational events is vital to fostering a love of books in children and young people that continues throughout life and enhances wellbeing at all stages.
“As well as being a fun day out for the family, involving children and young people in creative and cultural events at an early age sets them up for a lifetime of creative engagement, with far-reaching positive impacts in language, emotional and social growth, and academic performance.”

While many of the day’s sessions are free, ticketing is required for all events. FAQs for the events are available here.
The Wee Write Family Day follows World Book Day 2026 on 5 March – the National Literary Trust’s annual celebration of authors, illustrators and books which is designed to promote the joy of reading.
