Beer lovers across the central belt will be able to enjoy a pint of St Mungo for just £2.90 from March 10-12, as part of a three-day anniversary celebration marking two decades since the independent brewer first opened its doors in Glasgow’s East End.
Founded in 2006, WEST has grown from a small start-up into a respected name in Scotland’s drinks sector, at a time when much of the global beer market has become increasingly dominated by multinational ownership.
Remaining independently owned has allowed the brewery to retain full control over how and where its beer is made, a position that has become increasingly rare within the industry.
Its bar and restaurant, WEST on the Green, located in the former Templeton’s carpet factory, blends German brewing tradition with Glasgow hospitality. It has since become one of the city’s most popular food and drink destinations, welcoming half a million customers every year.
The award-winning brewery was founded by Bavarian native Petra Wetzel, who first fell in love with Scotland as a child before returning to study at the University of Glasgow in the 1990s. The idea for WEST was born when her father visited Glasgow and struggled to find a beer similar to those he enjoyed back home in Germany.
This commitment to traditional brewing remains central to WEST’s identity. The brewery is the only one in the UK to produce all its lagers and ales in strict accordance with the Reinheitsgebot, the German Purity Law of 1516, a principle that limits ingredients to water, malt, hops and yeast and remains key to WEST’s success now.
WEST uses soft water from Loch Katrine, prized by brewers around the world for its purity, alongside British malted barley and speciality malts sourced from the historic Weyermann Malz in Bamberg, Germany. Noble hops from Hallertau, one of Germany’s most famous brewing regions, give each beer its distinctive aroma and balance, while carefully guarded yeast strains bring everything together.
It’s a blend of Scottish character and German brewing tradition that has defined WEST for nearly two decades and continues to shape every pint today.
In an era when many independent breweries have faced rising production costs, squeezed margins and increased competition, WEST has continued to brew, package and distribute all of its beers from Glasgow.
Today, its range, which includes 10 brands including alcohol free and radlers, as well as seasonal releases, such as WEST’s Märzen for Oktoberfest, is stocked in hundreds of venues across Scotland and the UK, while remaining entirely independently operated.
Petra Wetzel stepped back from day-to-day operations in 2021, with Matt Munro taking over as managing director.
Matt said: “Reaching 20 years is a huge milestone for everyone involved with WEST. From day one, the aim was to create a place where people could come together and enjoy great beer, brewed properly.
“For us, brewing properly has always meant taking a simple, traditional approach. We brew all of our beers in line with the German Reinheitsgebot, using just four ingredients.
“In a busy beer market, those principles help keep us focused on quality and consistency. It’s a big part of what defines WEST, and something we’re proud to have stayed true to over the past 20 years.
“St Mungo has been at the heart of what we do since 2006, so bringing its price back to where it started felt like the perfect way to thank the people who’ve supported us along the way.”
The £2.90 St Mungo offer will be available at WEST on the Green and 19 additional venues across the central belt during the anniversary period including Sloans, The Horseshoe Bar and Hootenanny.
In a further nod to its German roots, WEST on the Green will also serve its signature Currywurst at throwback pricing throughout the three-day celebration, with the dish available in-venue and for delivery via Kiosk by WEST on Uber Eats for £6.80.
Remaining proud of its Glasgow roots, WEST hopes to continue its success as it looks to the future. Matt explained: “Our focus is on staying true to what has made WEST successful, brewing properly, remaining independent and keeping our roots firmly in Glasgow.
“We’re proud of where we come from, and we want to continue building on that heritage for the next two decades.”
