The Gate has been at 251 Gallowgate for seven years (since 2019), but there has been a public house on this location for over 200 years, with the first landlord, James Reid, taking on the lease in 1826. To mark this milestone, the team has created Tales of The Gallowgate: a new cocktail list inspired by the characters, culture and chaos that have shaped the streets around it.
From market days and music legends to generations of local stories, the address has remained constant, evolving with the area while never losing its roots.
Crafted entirely in-house by the award-winning Gate team, the menu blends modern techniques and imaginative flavour combinations with local storytelling, paying respect to the past while firmly looking forward.
The Gate’s mission has always been simple: to balance the warmth and welcome of a traditional Glasgow pub with an innovative drinks offering, and to keep the doors open to everyone. From long-time regulars to first-time visitors, the bar remains a space for all walks of life. Two centuries on, The Gate continues to do what it’s always done best: honour the old, embrace the new, and pour something worth talking about.
On the menu, you’ll find everything from cocktail nods to the Pizza Crunch, Billy Connolly and the Cow People at the Barras. There’s also a margarita collaboration with Ho Le Fook chilli that’s a must-try.
The menu is full of signature cocktails like this one called The Robot.
A tribute to Glasgow street legend Robert the Robot, this cocktail channels retro futurism with a bright, nostalgic twist. Built around Haku Vodka, it blends Midori, manzanilla sherry, pandan and pineapple brine to create a drink that’s playful, slightly surreal and unexpectedly complex - much like the character himself. Crisp, tropical and subtly savoury, The Robot balances sweetness with sharp precision, delivering a serve that feels both throwback and forward-thinking in true Gallowgate style.
Andy Gemmell, owner of The Gate, said: “251 Gallowgate has been bringing people together for generations, and that means something to us. When we created this menu, it was important that it respected that history while still feeling unmistakably like The Gate.
“Our team here are incredibly creative. Every drink has been developed in-house, rooted in flavour and storytelling. We’ve built our cocktail experiences inspired by the street outside our door.
“I’ve fallen in love with this part of Glasgow. It has grit, humour and heart. I’m genuinely excited about its future, blending old-school character with a new-wave energy. We’re proud to be part of that evolution. We love pubs; we love this city, and if you leave feeling better than when you walked in, even better.”
The Gate has gained a reputation as a leading player in the Scottish pub and cocktail scene, offering a unique and vibrant atmosphere, toasties, and an extensive selection of craft beers, cocktails, Scotch whisky, and gin. The pub's commitment to outstanding service, a welcoming ambience, and top-quality drinks has earned it recognition across the UK.
Tales of the Gallowgate is available now at The Gate. For reservations, please book online, or email contact@thegateglasgow.com
