Part of the Scottish Library and Information Council’s (SLIC) Shelf Life campaign, the free evening event will explore influencer Claire Segeren’s - of popular blog ‘What Have We Dunoon?’ - journey of buying and renovating a derelict Victorian home in Sandbank, Dunoon.
Claire and her partner Cal ‘accidentally’ bought Jameswood Villa at auction, a derelict building that had lay empty for over twenty years; and spent the next four years taking on the enormous task of restoring the beautiful building. Sharing a warts-and-all account on social media garnered global media attention and saw them accrue more than 300,000 Instagram followers.
Chaired by Anna Campbell-Jones, presenter of the popular BBC show ‘Scotland’s Home of the Year’, the audience will hear from one half of intrepid young couple about the inspiring renovation and their focus on sustainability.
Anna added: “The restoration and repurposing of buildings sustainably is something I have always been passionate about. I am really excited about meeting Claire, and I have so many questions about the incredible story of their restoration of this once unloved home.”
SLIC’s Shelf Life campaign - which was awarded a share of the Scottish Government’s £550,000 Climate Engagement Fund, as part of its Net Zero ambitions - aims to get people around Scotland to join the climate change debate through a series of practical and inspiring events tailored for school, family, and adult audiences.
Marion Kunderan, acting head of programme at SLIC, said: “Shelf Life allows us to continue our work in driving the conversation around climate action, expanding our efforts to reach and inspire new audiences while demonstrating practical and affordable ways to engage.
“Libraries already play a central role in the climate action conversation, so it makes sense to continue this learning in these much-loved community hubs. Taking a place-based approach, we want to capture imaginations and increase engagement through a series of bespoke climate events which will facilitate people’s understanding of climate change issues and what it means for them and support their move towards a more sustainable lifestyle.”
Working in partnership with Glasgow Life, other events in the Glasgow ‘Shelf Life’ series include:
• a fascinating talk on ‘Climate, Community and the Crisis of Meaning’ with author, broadcaster and human ecologist, Alastair McIntosh (Tuesday 19 March, 6.30pm-7.30pm);
• a family-friendly musical masterclass in sustainable songwriting with songwriter, poet and novelist, Alan McClure (Saturday 16 March, 11am-12pm); and
• a hands-on sustainable sewing workshop with Eilidh Weir of All That is Braw (Saturday 16 March, 2-4pm).
