Hair and Beauty students joined forces with the Hospitality department, working together to serve up a delicious continental breakfast buffet with a side of bespoke beauty treatments for local residents, college staff and fellow students, all in the name of raising money for children and families living in poverty.
The college's cafe and bistro was transformed into a welcoming community hub for their Big Scottish Breakfast, before attendees were treated to a beauty treatment of their choice, with options ranging from facials, to massages, and eyebrow shaping.
The impressive turn out, and generosity of everyone involved will go a long way in raising awareness of one of The STV Children’s Appeal’s biggest fundraisers, Big Scottish Breakfast, which is currently underway.
A key part of STV Children’s Appeal’s fundraising calendar, The Big Scottish Breakfast asks people to get together for breakfast with colleagues, classmates and friends to raise money which is then donated to eligible Scottish schools to fund their own breakfast clubs. This funding ensures children affected by poverty can access a filling meal and have a full tummy to head into the classroom ready to learn.
In addition to raising money to help break the cycle of child hunger in Scotland, it was also a meaningful learning opportunity for Glasgow Kelvin College, who took pride in showcasing their skills while supporting an important cause.
Guests from the local community also had a brilliant time, enjoying the food, the friendly atmosphere, and the personal touch of their beauty treatments. Many even booked follow-up services and meals, highlighting the success of the day in strengthening community connections and reducing social isolation in the local area.
Emma Devers, Fundraising Manager at STV Children’s Appeal, said: “The best thing about Big Scottish Breakfast is that you can do it however you want - and that’s exactly what Glasgow Kelvin College did! We encourage people to get creative, to make it as big or as small as they want - the important thing is getting people together to help us raise money for school breakfast clubs throughout Scotland.
“Glasgow Kelvin College students and lecturers did an amazing job. It’s fantastic to see the local community really getting behind these talented students and supporting our efforts. We cannot thank them enough for their ongoing commitment to our cause.”
Andrea Macaulay, Curriculum Manager of Community Learning, Hospitality and Transitions to Learning and Work at Glasgow Kelvin College, said: “Our students absolutely loved being part of the Big Scottish Breakfast. It’s a fantastic way for them to gain hands-on experience, while also giving something back to the community. Events like this help them build creativity, teamwork, and confidence, all while making a real difference.”
