With work ongoing at George Square, Glasgow has grasped the opportunity to do things a little differently. This Christmas, as Glasgow celebrates its 850th anniversary, discover a trail full of twinkling lights, joyful sights, and festive cheer.
Glaswegians and visitors alike can look forward to a whole new experience as Sauchiehall, Buchanan and Argyle Streets are transformed into a sparkling, shimmering festive wonderland.
On 20 November enchanting roaming festive street performers will bring the city centre to life from 4.30pm, with the lighting trail switched on at 6pm. Every other evening through to 3 January 2026 it will be illuminated at 4pm. People can watch as the lights go on from anywhere along the trail.
Talented local artists have created five glittering light installations that will come to life as people wander through the city centre with family and friends, following the glow.
Ellie Mills and Alice Brown took inspiration from Glasgow’s iconic neon signs and love of blethering. They invited local communities to share funny and nostalgic stories of what Christmas means to them. These festive stories have been translated into Bright City, a series of glowing animations projected onto Sauchiehall Street. Like overheard conversations brought to life they will brighten different spots on this popular shopping street this winter, celebrating Glasgow’s 850th anniversary with humour and a little bit of magic.
Christmas came early to Sandaig Primary School in Barlanark when they won a school’s competition to see their design created in light. Sandaig Primary pupil, Roza, aged 11 will see her dazzling display, complete with twinkling Christmas trees and enchanting snowmen, spread festive cheer as it illuminates Sauchiehall Street.
Mrs Clark, Head Teacher said: “We’re delighted that Roza’s design will light up Sauchiehall Street this Christmas. Seeing her creativity sparkle will be a magical moment for the whole school and something we are all incredibly proud of. The children will remember this for years to come.”
Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, in the heart of the city, will stop passers-by in their tracks with Constellations, a breathtaking display of colour and light by artist Domme Ewan. The installation transforms the iconic façade into a living night sky, as soft hues of violet, blue, and gold shimmer above Buchanan Street like the Northern Lights over the city. Capturing the wonder of looking up to a winter’s sky, Constellations invites everyone to pause and feel the glow of Christmas under a cosy canopy of light.
Jamie Wardrop’s Let Glasgow Flourish playful installation will be projected inside five windows of the historic Buck’s Head Building on Argyle Street. This animated visual sequence celebrates Glasgow’s natural life with colourful birds and festive evergreens of ivy, pine, and holly. Drawing on the ancient symbols of the city, the bird and the tree, Jamie reconnects these icons of Glasgow’s past with its future as the city marks its 850th anniversary.
At the Mercat Building on High Street, Kate Robinson’s Starry Messengers of Joy will delight visitors with a host of starry angelic figures made of light. Inspired by angels as universal messengers, the installation features hand-drawn, diverse spirits celebrating the elements of air, fire, earth, and water. Drawing on the warm reds, golds, and deep blues of historic manuscripts, with bursts of pink, acid green, and fiery orange, the angels move and change to music. They bring messages of joy, light, love, freedom, peace, and goodwill, illuminating the alcoves of this beautiful building.
As before, the iconic City Chambers will become a beacon of light, featuring a special Glasgow 850 installation with falling snowflakes. When this iconic building glows, it is a joyful signal to everyone that the countdown to Christmas has begun.
Glasgow’s Lord Provost, Jacqueline McLaren, said: “Turning on Glasgow’s Christmas lights is one of the highlights of the year, and this year it’s even more exciting as we unveil a brand-new trail that will bathe the centre in festive light. As Glasgow celebrates its 850th anniversary, welcoming families, and friends into the city centre to enjoy this special moment makes it even more memorable. I can’t wait to see Glasgow shine brighter than ever when our light trail is illuminated for the first time on 20 November.”
This year, Glasgow’s main festive activities will take place at Glasgow Green and St Enoch Square. Twinkling lights and attractions will transform part of Glasgow Green into an enchanted wonderland, complete with theatre performances in the Big Top, open-air skating, and traditional fairground rides. Visitors can pause for the perfect pit stop at the seasonal food and drink stalls.
St Enoch Square will welcome the world’s first solar-powered observation wheel. After a spin in the sky, visitors can enjoy live music, family-friendly rides, and festive shopping with bespoke gifts, food, and drink.
This year the Christmas Tree and Crib will be found at the Cathedral Precinct. A lovely, historic setting, perfect for a festive moment of calm beside the sparkling tree lights and nativity scene.
The much-loved Glasgow Santa Dash takes place on Sunday 7 December, giving participants a chance to raise funds for the Beatson Cancer Charity and the Lord Provost’s Charity Fund. Donations to the Lord Provost’s Charity Fund, which helps children and vulnerable people across Glasgow.
Whether you live in Glasgow or are just visiting, it’s the perfect time to explore, enjoy the lights, and feel the magic of winter. For more details, visit www.peoplemakeglasgow.com/christmas
