The 77th Glasgow (Disabled) Scouts has been recognised with The King’s Award for Voluntary Service (KAVS) 2025, the highest honour given to volunteer-led groups across the UK, often described as the MBE for voluntary organisations.
The announcement, made on His Majesty The King’s birthday, celebrates the exceptional dedication of the volunteers who make the 77th Glasgow (Disabled) Scouts possible. The group delivers inclusive, life-changing Scouting experiences for young people with physical and learning disabilities across Glasgow and beyond.
Operating four sections across the city, volunteers ensure every young person can enjoy the same adventure you’d find at any Scout group, building confidence, making friends, and creating lifelong memories. More than 40 volunteers give their time every week to make that possible, adapting activities, maintaining equipment, and providing transport and care. A further 40 volunteers support weekend camps at the charity’s flagship Glengoyne Lodge and the group’s week-long summer camp, which this year took place in Carlisle.
Jamie Seery, Operations Manager of the 77th Glasgow (Disabled) Scouts, said: “This award is the highest honour a volunteer organisation can receive, and it belongs to every single person who gives their time. Week in, week out, our volunteers make sure young people can do things many never thought possible, real adventure, real friendship, real belonging. I see the impact they make on the young people and their families every single week. They don’t do it for recognition, but they deserve it more than anyone I know.”
Ross Syme, Lead Volunteer at the 77th Glasgow (Disabled) Scouts, added: “Receiving The King’s Award for Voluntary Service is truly humbling. It recognises the heart, energy, and commitment that every one of our volunteers brings to the group. We do this for the Scouts, for the smiles, the breakthroughs, the moments of joy and confidence. This award validates the importance of that mission and honours the people who make it happen, week after week. We believe every young person deserves the chance to experience the adventure of Scouting, and this award is a powerful recognition of that commitment. I hope it inspires more people to get involved and help make Scouting more inclusive.”
Over the past year, the 77th Glasgow (Disabled) Scouts has expanded its volunteer base through partnerships with local Scout groups, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme, and targeted social media campaigns, encouraging new volunteers to support inclusive Scouting across the city.
Representatives from the 77th Glasgow (Disabled) Scouts will receive a crystal award and certificate signed by His Majesty The King, and will be invited to a Royal Garden Party in 2026 to celebrate alongside other award recipients.
Dedicated ASN sessions are to be hosted at Glasgow's Winter Wonderland at Glasgow Green to enable families in need of support to have a festive day out.
