Calum Bowie plays his biggest Glasgow headline show yet at Barrowland Ballroom on 5th December and, in the true Scottish tradition of lifting up the next generation, has invited two fresh local talents to support him at the landmark show.
Opening the gig will be 19-year-old Irvine singer and songwriter Abbie Gordon, who's been turning heads among the Scottish music community with her talent for incisive lyrics and infectious pop melodies, reflecting the not-always-straightforward life of a teenage girl. Abbie has previously supported Jess Glynn, Kerr Mercer, Pat Hamilton, Luke La Volpe and more, and headlined her own Glasgow shows at The Poetry Club and King Tut’s. She was named Runner Up as Young Artist of the Year at the Scottish Live Music Awards 2024. Abbie is currently working with some of the UK’s top producers, with her debut single release coming soon.
“Honestly, getting to support Calum Bowie in Aberdeen and at the Barrowlands feels unreal!” says Abbie. “It’s such a big moment for me and I’m very grateful to Calum for inviting me. Opportunities like this mean everything when you’re just starting out. They help you reach new people, learn loads, and keep pushing forward. I absolutely can’t wait for the shows in December!”
Edinburgh singer Brodie Barclay has released a string of heartfelt and anthemic singles, with a natural charm and instinctive, organic musical sensibility, singing in his distinctive Scottish accent. “The songs of mine I appreciate the most are the ones I feel have written themselves” says Brodie, “and it’s a bit more of an expression rather than something that feels moulded.”
“I opened for Calum at the Mash House in Edinburgh back in 2022 and it’s been amazing following his monumental journey since. It’s always a privilege getting to open for artists like Calum who treat the platform they’ve built as something to be shared and used to help grow the next wave of Scottish artists coming through. It’ll be my first time playing The Barras and I can’t wait to seize the opportunity with both hands. An absolute dream come true! There’s no shortage of talent in Scotland and it’s great to see established artists lending a hand where it’s needed.”
Brodie headlines his own Glasgow show at King Tut’s on January 29th, as part of the venue’s New Year’s Revolution series.
Announcing the supports, Calum said: “I’m super excited to have Abbie and Brodie joining me for these shows. I’ve been fans of them both for a while now so I can’t wait to see their sets. I’ve been hearing great things about Abbie and love how she has such an interesting approach with her lyricism. Everything she does feels very unique and her shows just seem to keep getting bigger and bigger. I’m sure she’s going to be huge. Me and Brodie were actually on the same show in 2022 at the Mash House in Edinburgh, so I’ve been a fan ever since. It’s crazy to see the growth since then. I love his songwriting and I remember being in awe of his latest EP. It’ll be fun catching up about what’s happened in the years since our last show together.
For me, support gigs have been such a huge part of where I am now. Being able to learn from so many amazing artists and how they craft their music and shows has always been super inspiring. They also give you a means to reach a whole new audience and a lot of the time, fans of that artist buy tickets or check out my stuff afterwards. It’s all well and good building stuff online but connecting with an audience has always been such a huge part of why I do music, and support slots are so important for that.”
