Fife-born Seonaid Aitken is a versatile multi-instrumentalist and orchestrator based in Glasgow, specialising in Gypsy Jazz. Classically trained at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama, she has multiple Scottish Jazz Awards to her name and presents Jazz Nights on BBC Radio Scotland. She has played regularly with the Orchestra of Scottish Opera for 21 years. Seonaid leads an ensemble of talented musicians in this special concert at The National Piping Centre.
In the first half of the concert, Seonaid will present her musical suite Chasing Sakura, which was originally commissioned by Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival in 2021 and has just been longlisted for the 2022 SAY Awards. It follows the lifespan of the cherry blossom and explores the themes of a fleeting but beautiful life, lived to the fullest, inspired by Seonaid’s time living in Tokyo during Hanami, the flower ‘viewing’ or celebration of sakura.
In the second half, Seonaid will pay homage to her favourite jazz vocalist, the iconic Ella Fitzgerald, by exploring the Great American Songbook with selections from her 2019 album, What Is This Thing Called Love?.
Seonaid Aitken said: “I’m very happy to be back on the road this autumn thanks to Scotland on Tour. The National Piping Centre is an iconic venue in Glasgow and I can’t wait to perform alongside some wonderful musicians there.”
Scotland on Tour will take place over a period of 12 months between April 2022 and 2023. The remaining gig taking place at The National Piping Centre is Mairi Campbell In Concert on Thursday 10th November 2022.
Finlay MacDonald, Director of Piping at The National Piping Centre, said: “We are delighted to be hosting some fantastic gigs as part of Scotland on Tour. Seonaid Aitken is one of Scotland’s finest musicians and she will be joined by a talented ensemble for what is sure to be a great night of live music. We’re lucky enough to be hearing Seonaid’s beautiful Chasing Sakura suite as well as some classics during this special performance.”
Scotland on Tour supports the creation of hundreds of concerts and performances at much-loved arts centres, town halls and community venues across Scotland. More than 120 artists are set to perform at more than 100 venues across the country as part of the initiative.
The project, which has been created and managed by Active Events, was made possible by £750,000 of Scottish Government backing and focuses on increasing the number of opportunities to showcase and enjoy live music, while bringing exciting acts to the doorstep of city, towns, villages and rural communities.
The year-long Scotland on Tour bill includes both emerging and established artists with genre-spanning acts appearing across the breadth and width of the country, with rock, pop, jazz, classical, folk, trad and acoustic genres all being showcased.
