Glasgow Zine Fest: Social Theory & Pop Culture: The ‘True Crime’ Boom and Social Harm Theory

About Glasgow Zine Fest: Social Theory & Pop Culture: The ‘True Crime’ Boom and Social Harm Theory

Considering the vast landscape of recent true crime – from podcasts and documentaries to the coverage of high profile trials like Amber v Johnny – this talk will use ‘Social Harm Theory’ and ‘Hierarchies of Victimisation’ to aim to understand the reframing of crime and victimisation today.

How do we come to understand our own potential victimhood when we consume this kind of media? Are we actively participating in the reframing of crime, violence, harm and victimisation when we engage with true crime?

Like previous talks in the Zine Library’s ‘Social Theory and Pop Culture’ series, this event will hope to give attendees an introduction to Social Harm theories and Victimology, as well as some critical engagement with the ‘Stay Sexy and Don’t Get Murdered’ branch of true crime as light entertainment.

CONTENT WARNINGS: Discussion of crime, victimhood and representations of violence
