BRBQ unites three distinctive voices in Scottish jazz, James Brady (trumpet/flugelhorn),Mario Caribé (bass) and Stu Brown (drums/percussion), with one of the UK’s leading interpreters of Bossa Nova and Brazilian jazz, Ed Rice (piano).
Brazilian born Caribé lectures in jazz at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and the prolific and versatile Stu Brown spent 3 weeks on a British Council funded residency in Brazil followed by a UK tour with cultural exchange project Orquestra Scotland Brasil.
Rice is currently working on a PhD in interpreting bossa nova from the perspective of a jazz pianist, whilst Brady has been studying and playing the music of Brazil for over 10 years, and is known for multi instrumental performances incorporating trumpet, flugelhorn, melodica and percussion.
Each artist is internationally in demand as a performer and a composer.
Long-time friends and collaborators Ed and James met in 2014 while studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.
Playing together on-and-off ever since, BRB (theBrady/Rice Brazilian project) is their first formal collaboration, building on their shared love of Brazilian music and particular Brazilian jazz. Ed’s PhD research into bossa nova gives him a unique perspective on music which has long formed an important part of the jazz repertoire but has rarely been given the full attention it deserves, at least in Europe.
Since moving to Glasgow in late 2021, James has rapidly made an impact on the Scottish jazz scene, including performing with the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, launching a trio with Chris Greive and Graeme Stephen, and undertaking a Creative Scotland-funded research trip to New Orleans.
Since August 2022, James and Ed, as both BRBQ and BRB2 (duo format), have performed at venues across Scotland including the Blue Lamp, Glasgow University, Pianodrome and Edinburgh’s legendary Jazz Bar. In 2023, the project expands with performances at Newcastle’s Globe Theatre, Garscube, Durham’s Gala Theatre.
