Carve a Japanese hanko stamp to make your stamp impression, learn about the different stages in the Tenkoku 篆刻 Seal Engraving process and the tools used. Enjoy the meditative process of carving the stone to make the hanko 判子, then inking the stone with the deep red pigment and pressing on the delicate Japanese washi paper to create your inei 印影 impression. Immerse yourself in the moment and notice the lovely sense of touch of the stone in your hands and the lively lines and the deep spaces of the carving.
Workshop leader Shōgen Blair will help you create your stamp and will demonstrate how to work with the traditional tools and materials from Japan such as the wooden clamps, smooth stones and carving cutters. He will help you create a design to carve, of a kanji character, or related to your name or a friend’s name or your interest (in Japanese or English, time allowing).
You will learn about the inspiring old Tensho and other styles of characters used, and the two main types of red and white letter seals, including which sizes and how to use them, opening up a helpful and fascinating cultural insight.
No previous experience is needed, and all materials are provided. Great also for folk with an interest in Japanese or Chinese culture, Zen, or arts or language.
About the teacher:
With demonstrations and friendly help from stamp maker and calligrapher Shōgen Blair Thomson, who first studied Tenkoku in 2009 in Toyama, Japan, with zen monks and also at workshops in Tokyo.
