While most musicians are taught that there’s a right and wrong way to learn, taking an unconventional approach to learning and playing music and writing songs has only served dyslexic singer-songwriter Jennifer Ewan well.
In a frank and honest conversation which recalls the pain of school years, Jennifer and Kim will contrast their respective dyslexic and non-dyslexic approaches to learning music, examine Jennifer's unique creativity and share how their supportive partnership allows Jennifer to hone her musical craft.
This intimate, live conversation will challenge the established opinions about right and wrong ways to approach learning music - and the importance of allowing dyslexic thinkers to work and learn in ways that work for them.
Dyslexia Scotland invites musicians, people with dyslexia, tutors, teachers and parents of dyslexic children willing to be inspired to the first of four unrecorded in-conversation lectures about the unique workings of the dyslexic mind.
Dyslexia lectures
This four-part series of lectures on dyslexic thinking examines the innate gifts of dyslexic minds and the constraints that society unwittingly places on them.
These lectures aim to inspire all people with dyslexia to embrace their ways of thinking and working and to raise awareness among the rest of the population about harnessing the power of dyslexic potential in our schools, industries and communities through inclusive practice.
This talk will be chaired by Dyslexia Scotland Young Ambassador John Devine.
Celtic blues mix
The Jennifer Ewan Band has established a musical fusion of Louisiana blues, heartfelt original songs and Cajun dance music with a Celtic tint. They released their first EP with Ramrock Records in 2022 and release a new single with the label later this year. The band is set to appear at the Edinburgh Fringe with their music show ‘Bonnie Bayou’ this August.
John Devine
Hosting the event is John Devine, a 26-year-old dyslexic who was identified at a young age. After finishing his undergraduate degree he became an EFL Teacher and moved to Italy to teach and to study for his master's degree. John also works for ITSS Verona, an international, cultural, apolitical association dedicated to the study of security and expanding the debate around it. John has been a long-standing Young Ambassador for Dyslexia Scotland.
