Roughly 2.2 million households across the UK are eligible for Pension Credit. However, approximately 37% – an estimated 880,000 – are not claiming the support they are entitled to. Furthermore, 310,000 pensioner households are missing out on help with rent through Housing Benefit – accounting for 21% of those who are eligible to claim. In a single year, £2.8bn of Pension Credit and Housing Benefit goes unclaimed by older people.
Actively addressing pensioner poverty, Zubir has arranged drop-in support sessions at three centres – with accessible spaces – across Glasgow South West. Local pensioners will receive practical support and digital equipment to be able to make an application.
We also recognise that there is a significant number of people who are missing out on other benefits. Ensuring people are accessing benefits they are entitled to, enables households and public services to better cope with the cost-of-living crisis. An estimated £23bn of support is unclaimed each year. As an office, the team want to offer practical and digital support to anyone who needs it.
