50 years since Scottish Daily News: where next for co-operative journalism?
Come along and learn about co-operative journalism past, present and future, as part of the Glasgow Trades Council May Day 2025 programme.
When bosses shuttered the Scottish Daily Express, redundant workers joined forces to seize the means of newspaper production. In May 1975 they launched the Scottish Daily News, the first worker-controlled, mass-circulation daily in Britain.
We will be screening Norman Pollock's prize-winning film Scottish Daily News, which tells the story of the Scottish Daily News from the closure of the Scottish Daily Express to the last run of the worker-controlled daily.
Joining us for a discussion on the past, present and future of co-operative journalism will be veterans of the struggle, Dorothy-Grace Elder and George Welsh. Also joining us will be present-day media pioneers, The Ferret and Clydesider Magazine.
Open to all to attend, the NUJ Glasgow Branch looks forward to seeing you there!
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
