About Burrell Bites: Keeping Cool In The Heat
In the 17th century, playful fish in water became a fashionable subject for Chinese painters and ceramic decorators of the Imperial Court.
The manufacture of powder blue porcelain had already been established by kilns in Jingdezhen (China), though it was only made in small quantities in the 18th century. High-quality gilding on powder blue ware was considered essential. The mottled character of the powder blue finish was greatly enhanced by illumination from the overlaid gold.
The 'carp' vase was produced for both the domestic and export markets. In the exhibition of coloured Chinese porcelain at the Burlington Fine Arts Club in 1896, there were only a dozen pieces of powder blue on display.
Once part of Sir William H. Bennett collection, this remarkable rouleau vase was bought for £175 by Sir William Burrell through dealer Jacques H. Duveen on the 28th of November 1917.
