The Cathode Ray are an alternative rock band from Edinburgh led by singer/songwriter/guitarist Jeremy Thoms. They released their fourth album “Advance Retreat” last September on Last Night From Glasgow (in conjunction with Stereogram Recordings), which reached the Scottish Albums Chart Top 20. The single “Travelling In Style” was one of BBC Radio Scotland DJ Billy Sloan’s tracks of the year.
Originally based on a loose concept of forging late seventies New York with post-punk Manchester, The Cathode Ray started life in 2006, initially as a songwriting collaboration between Paul Haig and Jeremy Thoms. The band’s debut single ‘What’s it all About?’/’Mind’ was also hailed as Single of the Year by Billy Sloan in his round up of 2006.
Following the departure of Haig from the project and the recruitment of guitarist Steve Fraser, the band’s eponymous debut album finally came out in April 2012 and featured high in many end-of-year roundups. The single ‘Dispersal’ was Track of the Month in April 2012 on the Janice Forsyth Show on BBC Radio Scotland.
The group released their second album “Infinite Variety” in April 2015 and third album “Heightened Senses” in November 2019, both to yet more positive reviews and end-of-year mentions.
The Letting Go are a relatively new band who have so far released one single “She Lied” on Stereogram Recordings.
The band line-up is:
Johnny Allan – Drums,
Neil Crossan – Vocals/Guitar,
Mike Heffron – Keyboards,
David Paul – Guitar,
David Rosenthal - Trumpet & Flute
Chris Thomas - Bass
They are currently working on their debut album.
“Made up of six experienced musicians, long-time stalwarts of the independent Scottish music scene, A balanced concoction of acoustic/electric guitars, keyboards, drums, bass and stirring bursts of trumpet and flute, augmented with passionate magnetic vocals, combines with an equally slinky and edgy compelling songwriting, to connect to that timeless British guitar pop heritage, varying from Orange Juice, Aztec Camera, to Felt, Lloyd Cole & The Commotions, China Crisis and, of course, The Smiths, dappled with ’60s sheens, deeply rooted in both heartfelt bright melodies and persuasive melancholy, along with visceral and confidential lyricism.”
