101 years ago, the Scottish Colourists exhibited together as a quartet for the first time in London. Considered to be Scotland's leading artists of the twentieth century the links between them were based more on personal than professional relationships and Alice will be talking about the ebb and flow of their individual and group reputations over the years.
Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell, John Duncan Fergusson, Samuel John Peploe and George Leslie Hunter were all born in Scotland in the 1870's and 1880's, though Hunter lived in America between the ages of fifteen and twenty-nine. It wasn't until 1948 that the name 'Scottish Colourists' was applied exclusively to these four artists but the concept has taken root within the art market and art history since then. Alice will explain all.
Alice Strang graduated in History of Art from Cambridge and has worked for Christie's in London and as a Senior Curator at the National Galleries of Scotland, curating exhibitions of the work of Cadell, Fergusson and Peploe. Currently a Senior Specialist in Modern & Contemporary Art at Lyon & Turnbull auctioneers, she has also now been commissioned by the Galleries to write a book about the Scottish Colourists for publication in late 2026.
