Framed within a queer love story, Mistress Pieces, by writer and activist Jen Hyatt, is an unapologetic and experimental celebration of madness, which encourages us to embrace chaos in finding meaning in contemporary life. Experimental in form, the heart of the work is a vivid recounting of a psychotic episode:
“In every moment, words arrive - written on the flaps of cigarette packets, receipts from endless bottles of wine, walls of the house, along the curve of my thigh… They are my passion, my relentless lover… I call them my ‘mistress pieces’.”
The installation mimics the narrator’s experience by reimagining the living room of an ordinary house, rendered completely white. Titled A Home for Madness, set in the Project Space at Civic House, the interior becomes a blank canvas, filled with words from Mistress Pieces. Visitors are invited to engage with the work by adding their own “mistress pieces” using art pens, provided on entry, while the audiobook plays in the background.
A talk by Jen Hyatt will take place at 4:15 PM, followed by an open public event from 5:00–7:00 PM, where guests can meet the artist and have their copies of Mistress Pieces signed. The publication is available in print, audio, and eBook formats, and can be ordered online or purchased at the event. Contact us for a review copy.
The installation echoes Hyatt’s earlier participatory work using a row of condemned houses in Hackney, London, where community members inscribed their memories on the walls of their soon-to-be-demolished homes. That project led to the creation of Big White Wall — now Togetherall — a pioneering digital mental health support platform.
