Solo portrait painting exhibition ‘Gné’ in Cass Art Glasgow, running from the 10th - 22nd of November 2025. 10th of November is the opening night at 6:30pm-8pm, after the 10th it is open free entry until the 22nd. Paintings will be available to purchase.
The word ‘Gné’ (pron. guh-ney) is of Irish origin; It has different meanings depending on the context it is used in. In some cases it means an “aspect”, “feature” or “form”, in others it can mean “sex/ gender”(a modern usage).
‘Gné’ resonated with me for this series as I wanted my works to transform in the eye of the viewer, relying on preconception. By creating a series of somewhat ambiguous facial expressions, it opens the discussion of how we interpret certain features in relation to our own catered perception.
The works depict women’s heads, most lacking the addition of a background to prevent swaying the viewer with context clues on how to feel- this with the expressions portrayed and the removal of the women’s hair, challenges the notions of femininity and what we require to perceive such.
Some of the pieces are expressive in mark making, colour and line work while others are more refined, rendered and blended. This shows the range of complexity in our understanding and display of emotions, along with our depth of comprehension on the topic of femininity; both inescapable associations with the concept of ‘feeling’.
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
