The festival will again be a packed programme with a diverse range of films - documentary, animation, feature films and short films as well as artists film and video work – along with talks and events around the films so be prepared for an exciting weekend of film in the Southside!
This is the fifth edition of the festival - in previous years we have screened across the Southside’s most famous venues including Pollok House, Govanhill Baths and Pollokshaws Burgh Hall as well as unique pop-up events in spaces including Queens Park Boat Shed and New Victoria Gardens.
The festival will screen films from all over the world but will have a particular focus on Scottish, Glasgow and Southside Glasgow films. This year the Southside Filmmaker Award returns giving the audience an opportunity to vote for their favourite Southside filmmaker or film made in or about the Southside of Glasgow. Submissions are open now for this and are free. Deadline to submit is midnight, 1 June 2015 - more info on our new website www.southsidefilm.co.uk.
This year’s festival will also focus on the cinema going heritage of the Southside and films made in the Southside. We want to see your films and hear your memories of going to the cinema in the Southside before the last cinema in the area at closed in 2001.
Rummage in your attic and show boxes to find photographs, films, tapes, slides, audio recording and submit it to us before midnight, 1 June 2015 - more info on our website www.southsidefilm.co.uk. We are also holding some information events in May in Shawlands called ‘Bring Your Own Archive’ so come and talk to us about what film or cinema related archive you may have.
The first of these events is on Sunday 10 May at Shawlands Arcade between 2-5pm and later at the Glad Café from 5-7pm followed by a free screening of ‘Glasgow 1980’ at 7pm. ‘Glasgow 1980’ is a 1971 documentary edited by Bill Forsyth (‘Local Hero’, ‘Gregory’s' Girl’) about what Glasgow would be like in the 1980s after the redevelopment of its traffic system and the construction of the new housing developments in the 1970s. The film includes some footage from 1971 of Queens Park, Shawlands and the Gorbals as well as the rest of Glasgow.
On Saturday 16 May we will return to Shawlands Arcade between 2-5pm so come along to find out how to submit your archive to the film festival. We hope to include as much local archive in the film festival in October as possible.
Karen O'Hare, Director of Southside Film Festival says, "We are very excited to announce the fifth Southside Film Festival with new dates in October, a new website and a new call for films! We will continue to support and promote local film talent with a call for new films to compete for the Southside Filmmaker Award and this year we are also focusing on local cinema heritage and want to discover some hidden film gems about cinema going or just films shot in the area that we can show at the film festival in October. We are doing a free call out for films now and people can find out more information on how to submit at our free events in May in Shawlands or on our new website. We will be announcing the film festival programme in the summer and there will be lots to look forward to in the autumn!"
