Preparations are already underway for 2016’s Royal National Mòd, which will take place in the Western Isles.
John Morrison, Chief Executive of An Comunn Gàidhealach said: “We’re thrilled to announce that Glasgow will host The Royal National Mòd in 2019 and look forward to bringing our celebrations to Scotland’s biggest city. Oban has been an incredibly welcoming town and the calibre of talent competing this year has been incredible. We are excited to start our planning for The Mòd Western Isles 2016 and look forward to seeing many familiar faces there next year.”
Although competitions at The Mod begin to wind down, the Fringe is still in full swing, with the Oral History Project Early Exhibition taking place at The Rockfield Centre. Showcasing stories and photographs gathered from pupils who attended Rockfield Primary School between 1945 and 1955, the exhibit will give a glimpse at what it was like to be a child in the post-war years in Oban. The Mod “Final Fling” will close the evening with spectacular performances by Skipinnish, Trail West and Heron Valley continuing into the wee hours.
DI Brown, Chair of the Glasgow 2019 Local Organising Committee, said: "The Local Organising Committee (LOC) are delighted that An Comunn thought our bid was strong enough to secure the Mod in Glasgow", said D-I Brown, chair of the LOC. He went on to say that "the LOC believe Glasgow is an excellent location to host the Mod and are sure they will deliver an excellent Mod for both Mod-goes and Glaswegians alike in 2019."
Councillor Archie Graham, Depute Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Glasgow Life said: “The links between Glasgow and the Gaelic language stretch back to the first settlements of people from the Highlands and Islands on the banks of the River Clyde. The city’s commitment to developing Gaelic culture remains as strong as ever. We look forward to welcoming the Royal National Mod back to Glasgow in 2019 where everyone who comes along to compete, to volunteer or to simply enjoy this most Scottish of occasions will receive the warmest of welcomes. Glasgow’s international reputation as a welcoming host city continues to grow following the best ever Commonwealth Games, held in the City last year. The return of the Mod in 2019 will add still further to that global recognition.”
