Glasgow is one of six cities across the UK set to host a Flagship Games event along with London, Belfast, Cardiff, Norwich and Sheffield. The Glasgow Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games will take place on Sunday 20 March 2016 in Glasgow Green and the surrounding area.
Participants are being encouraged to run, walk, swim or cycle by signing up for the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Mile, the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Swimathon and the Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Cycle. The money raised from the challenge will help disadvantaged people living incredibly tough lives, across the UK and in some of the world’s poorest communities.
The Mile event winds its way around the picturesque Glasgow Green while the Cycle route skirts the River Clyde towards the East End and back towards the city centre. The Swimathon action takes place a few minutes away from Glasgow Green in Glasgow Club Gorbals.
Glasgow Green will also host plenty of exciting activity throughout the day, with opportunities to try a range of sports from local clubs. In addition that day will be full of musical entertainment to give participants and spectators something to enjoy after the Mile, Cycle and Swimathon.
Depute Leader of Glasgow City Council and Chair of Glasgow Life, Councillor Archie Graham OBE, said: "The Sport Relief Games promises to be one of the highlights in an incredible sporting year in Glasgow. We are a city that loves sport and that will be on show during the Games.
“We are also the Friendly City with a big heart and I know that the people of Glasgow will get behind Sport Relief and help raise money for those less well off in communities across country and the world.”
Participants in the Sport Relief Mile will be able to run or walk 1 mile, 3 miles or 6 miles, while those taking part in the Swimathon will be encouraged to swim either 1.5k, 2.5k or 5k. Cyclists will be able to take part in a 3mile family

The call to action comes as BBC Radio 1 DJ and Presenter Greg James kicked off his Radio 1 Gregathlon for Sport Relief in the city showing the lengths he’s prepared to go to for the charity as he attempts to complete a triathlon a day for five consecutive days and around five different UK cities.
Not content with having a go at just one sport, Greg is arguably facing his toughest challenge yet by running cycling and swimming in freezing outdoor and indoor conditions. Despite his training, keeping the momentum going each day on his mission to raise as much cash as possible can for Sport Relief.
During Sport Relief 2014, the people of Scotland raised and donated more than £1.9million to help transform people’s lives across the UK and the world’s poorest communities.
This money has helped fund more than 150 projects right here in Scotland like CKUK in Glasgow, which offers innovative learning, multimedia, peer education, drama and safe social networking to people with learning difficulties in the city.
Other faces lining up to take part in the fun include, Greg James, Anita Rani, Jamie Laing, Melanie C and Rachel Riley, who can be seen modelling the official Sport Relief t-shirt, available online at www.sportrelief.com from today and in Sainsbury’s stores from 15th February.
