Mackintosh The Innovator: Past Present and Future has been established by the Glasgow shopping destination to encourage secondary school pupils to think creatively about Mackintosh’s legacy and his focus on innovation.
The Mackintosh theme was chosen to celebrate 2016 being designated Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design in Scotland. Rennie Mackintosh is one of Scotland’s most internationally renowned artists and architects.
Six schools and more than 100 students are taking part in the contest. Each of the schools – Govan High School, Williamwood High School, Hillhead High School, Lochend Community High, Springburn Academy and Notre Dame High School – were invited to visit St. Enoch Centre for a presentation before receiving a tour of The Lighthouse, Scotland’s Centre for Design and Architecture.
All submissions must be complete by June 13 before going on display in a specially designed gallery on the first floor of St. Enoch Centre where shoppers will be invited to vote for their favourite entries. All submissions will also be judged by an expert panel.
The competition is divided into two categories: design and expressive. Pupils entering the design category are being encouraged to consider what Mackintosh would be working on if he was around today. Entrants to the expressive categories could take the form of interpretations of Mackintosh’s work but must not be reproductions.
The winning school in each category receives a cheque for £250, while the winning individuals receive vouchers worth up to £150 to spend at St. Enoch Centre. Second and third place runners up also receive vouchers.
Ian Elder, Chair of Glasgow Mackintosh and Manager of The Lighthouse, said:
“Glasgow Mackintosh are delighted to be working with St Enoch Centre on its Mackintosh The Innovator: Past Present and Future schools competition. 2016 is the year of Innovation, Architecture and Design and we were able to show the schools round The Lighthouse – the first public commission which Mackintosh was involved with - and let them see the innovations Mackintosh pioneered back in his time. We hope we have inspired them to create a winning piece for this year's competition."
Anne Ledgerwood, General Manager of St. Enoch Centre, said:
“Glasgow’s Mackintosh architecture and design is the envy of the world and one of the reasons that our retail sector continues to be one of the best in the UK. Brands want to be located in Glasgow because of the vibrant culture and heritage that Mackintosh has helped to create.
“I’m extremely proud of our new competition and I can’t wait to see our students’ submissions. Their creative skills have the potential to continue Mackintosh’s legacy and make Glasgow a great place to live and work.”
