An invitation to be part of the Mela

Local performance groups are being invited to be part of this year's Glasgow Mela in Kelvingrove Park!

The organisers of the Glasgow Mela have opened the doors to groups who would like to be onstage at this year’s event to submit proposals for how they would entertain the tens of thousands of people who attend the event. Traders and food providers are also being offered the opportunity to be part of Scotland’s largest free multi-cultural event which will be held on Sunday July 17 in Kelvingrove Park.

The programme for the Glasgow Mela which celebrated its 25th anniversary last year is still being assembled, but organisers are looking to community groups from around the city to get involved to appear at either the Kelvingrove Bandstand or Mehfil Stage.

Any organisation or collective which has established dance, drama or music performance and wants to be considered to be part of the Glasgow Mela 2016 should send a short biography, details of the performance you want to present, images, video or weblink to arts&music@glasgowlife.org.uk Information should be sent to this address by 25 April to be considered.

As well as great entertainment and unforgettable performances, the Glasgow Mela is renowned for the outstanding food and the diverse stalls which can be found at the event. Glasgow’s first Mela was in 1990 as part of the European City of Culture and was an indoor celebration at the then newly opened Tramway. It has also been held in Queens Park, at Glasgow Green and in more recent years at Kelvingrove Park. It has grown to a massive outdoor event which attracts tens of thousands of visitors and hundreds of artists and performers from all over the world.

Coming from the Sanskrit word “to meet”, the Mela has become an eagerly anticipated fixture on the cultural calendar of the city.
