Southside Fringe unveils our biggest programme to date with over 200 cultural and entertainment events in 50+ venues, running over 16 days from Friday 13 May- 29 May. This year, iconic venues like House for an Art Lover and the legendary Clutha Bar will feature Southside Fringe events, alongside Fringe stalwarts for #keepitsouth.
The volunteer-run festival, now in its 4th year, is one of the biggest community-led festivals in Glasgow and is geared to cater for all tastes with music, theatre, workshops and talks, along with introducing a new “heritage” strand spanning the ancient mysteries of Egypt and Arthurian legend to the 20th century.
Co-festival organisers Corinna Currie and Crawford Smith commented:
“The Southside Fringe is all about shining a light on the Southside of Glasgow and it never ceases to overwhelm us just how much the community get behind our festival year on year.”
“Thanks to our funders and sponsors who help us put the Fringe: Glasgow Life and Art Village, along with our sponsors Art on Scotland, Public-i, Clutha Trust, Southside Sessions, Mario’s Giffnock. To our media partners Southside Social, Camglen Radio, Cherryman Media, Sunny Govan Radio, and The Extra for helping to spread the word. And to OneTouch Print and Gallus Design for their work on making Southside Fringe look so good.”
The music programme features over 80 live music events catering for almost every musical taste. Acts include Martin Stephenson who returns to No 6; Kenyan based Ogoya Nengo & The Dodo Women's Vocal Group at The Glad; Daniel Meade & the Flying Mules unofficial album launch at The Rum Shack; Heart of Rust (Neil Young tribute) at Glad Cafe; The Mighty Sparrahawk vs Umbongo Nambarrie at The Stags Head.
Our theatre and cabaret programme includes Three Wee Crows Theatre Company from Oban portraying the home front in WWI Scotland in ‘Home Fires at Pollok House and Broken Sons’ at Servant’s Hall. Cabaret includes Southside Fringe favourites Kim Khaos and Tom Harlow with their ‘Glitter and Grind Revue’ at The Shed, and ‘Overheard in the Southside’, a regular West End evening hosted by Mark McG at the Bungo Bar and Grill.
Art on Scotland takes a lead on our arts programme. This will feature Art on the Park at House for an Art Lover, an arts market, entertainment and workshops for family entertainment. There will also be an exciting collaboration with Castlemilk Youth Complex with young people developing pieces to exhibit during the Fringe.
Southside Fringe will also feature jewellery workshops at Makers Workshop and meditation sessions at Finn’s Place.
Patrick Evans, Director of the Art Village highlights why our sponsors support the Southside Fringe: "The Southside Fringe has developed into one of those rare local festivals that really does work and the buzz the Fringe generates throughout in the Southside is simply terrific. That’s why we welcome their Box Office to our galleries in Shawlands Shopping Centre.”
