On Saturday 23 July visitors can enjoy a dizzying array of specially planned free activities in one of five Glasgow museums and nearby attractions. Afterwards families can head outside and hop on-board a beautiful vintage bus, carefully restored and maintained by the Glasgow Vintage Vehicle Trust, for a short ride to another venue en route and some more engaging goings-on.
The idea is to showcase the city’s museums alongside popular visitor destinations. The Burrell Collection, Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Riverside Museum, Glasgow Museum Resource Centre and Scotland Street School Museum are participating together with the Tall Ship, Fairfield Govan and The Govan Stores.
The raft of activities will range from a spot of indoor pond dipping with the RSPB to storytelling and animal handling with Zoo-ed at Kelvingrove, where little ones can also make an ancient Egyptian mask to take home. In slightly messier taster activities, little ones can get creative with hands on art projects and discover a world of stories inspired by stunning objects at the Burrell Collection with storyteller Amanda Edmiston. At Riverside it’s all about hot air, so parents and grandparents should be well-equipped to help youngsters’ race paper planes and hot air balloons.
For those inspired to learn a little more about Glasgow’s greatest shipyard hop on the stunning vintage bus and head over to Fairfield Heritage, situated in its prestigious former office headquarters across the water. The nautical theme continues over at the Tall Ship, which is offering a range of pirate themed activities, while the Govan Stores should ignite the imagination with stories and artefacts relating to Glasgow’s Celtic and Viking past.
Children from East Pollokshields Out of School Care were the first to snap up the opportunity to try out some of the activities that will be on offer at the Burrell Collection. The fun was all themed around storytelling, dressing up and exploring some of the city’s stunning treasures.
Chair of Glasgow Life, Councillor Archie Graham, said: “In the last year almost 4 million people have visited Glasgow Museums. The city’s museums offer an engaging range of displays that enable our citizens and visitors alike to learn more about a vast array of subjects, from art to transport and technology, world cultures and social history”.
“This Saturday they will also be full of free, exciting events and activities aimed at all the family. Whether you’re a regular visitor or joining us for the first time, this weekend is the perfect time to go. And what better way to visit the different museums in Glasgow than by hopping on board the beautifully restored vintage bus for a trip around town.”
Alicia Watson who is programming The Great Big Heritage Bus Tour activities at the Burrell Collection added: “I’m often involved in organising activities that excite young inquisitive minds. There are plenty of ways to fire up a child’s imagination and storytelling, dressing up and exploring intriguing museum objects always feature high on that list, so we’ve brought them together for a day of fun at the Burrell. If your diary has a space on Saturday come and join us for a creative day that is sure to have something for everyone.”
Activities at the Burrell Collection, Kelvingrove, Riverside, GMRC and Scotland Street together with those on offer at the Tall Ship, Govan Stores and Fairfield Govan and the quirky bus trip between the venues are free. Activities and journeys are available from 11am to 4pm and are suitable for the whole family. There is no need to pre-book, activities and journeys are available on a drop-in, first-come first-served basis.
