A leading dance company performing at Tramway this autumn is looking for four women from the Glasgow area to perform in their show when it is staged in the city – and no acting or dancing experience is necessary to take part.
COAL, a riveting dance theatre show based on the 1980s miner’s strike and life in the coal mining community comes to Tramway on 30 September and 1 October. Choreographed by award winning contemporary dance artist Gary Clarke, the show tells the story of a working class community fighting for its future.
The new cast members will play members of the women’s union ‘Women Against Pit Closures’ in a short section of the play.
The women who take part will be playing characters aged 30 plus and preferably have links to the mining industry.
A food and travel allowance to cover rehearsals as well as two complimentary tickets to the show will be provided – and the new cast members will perform alongside and be supported by acclaimed dance artist TC Howard.
The role will involve some physical work and Gary Clarke and TC Howard will work with everyone’s individual needs and abilities.
Kelly Leighton, a cleaner from the mining village of Kellingley in Yorkshire who took part in the show last year, said: “It was exciting, exhilarating, emotional, rewarding...the team could not have been more welcoming and understanding and it really did feel we were in it together. I feel immensely proud. To anybody with the opportunity of taking part, I would say go for it!”
Councillor Archie Graham, OBE, Chair of Glasgow Life said: “Throughout the year Tramway offers a fantastic range of ways to become involved in its exciting programme of performance and visual arts, film, and events. This fascinating opportunity from the Gary Clarke Company is a great new way to take part in the arts, by working with a professional dance company before taking to the stage of an internationally acclaimed venue.”
If you are interested, please register to take part in a workshop at Tramway on Tuesday 13 September from 6.30pm to 8.30pm, by emailing Laura Barber at engagementcoal@gmail.com or calling 07391 621966.
The workshop is an opportunity to meet Gary Clarke & TC Howard, find out more about the production, ask questions and try out some ideas for the show.
