Calling ex-National Servicemen: the National Service Life Stories project wants to hear from you.

The National Service Life Stories oral history project is looking to interview men from Glasgow who did National Service between 1949 and 1962.

Across Britain, 2.3 million young men were called up for National Service. They had very varied experiences. Most went into the Army, but some joined the RAF or the Navy. Some saw active service, more served abroad, but many spent two years in Britain. By gathering oral histories from National Servicemen from different regions in the British Isles, the project aims to find out what people thought and felt about National Service, from before being called up, to demobilisation, and to understand more about the effect National Service had on people’s lives afterwards.

The project is conducted by historians Professor Peter Gurney, Dr Matthew Grant and Dr Joel Morley from the University of Essex, supported by a grant from the Leverhulme Trust.
