The three day educational event will feature workshops, music, food and archive film footage. Academics, politicians, social entrepreneurs, historians and community leaders will come together to discuss and explore what we now consider as ‘Glaswegian heritage’
The festival will focus on different aspect of multicultural life, explore the barriers to integration in our local area and provide opportunities to participate in finding and proposing creative solutions. We’ll be challenging why ideas of discrimination exist, with the ambition of bringing communities together to stand against prejudice. Stories of Glasgow’s Journey, Challenges and Future will come together with the ambition of promoting RESPECT, TOLERANCE and UNITY
Dr Alan Leslie of the Institute of Heritage and Sustainable Human Development (InHerit) has curated a programme for Friday 25 August, in which workshops and speakers will focus on the journey of migration to Glasgow. There will be talks from Alan Craig of Glasgow Clyde College and Dr Kenny Brophy of the University of Glasgow among others. Friday has a focus on the local primary schools, while Moving Image Archive will provide relevant historical screenings aimed at an older audience. The day will culminate in a ‘Thought Lounge’, which will be an opportunity for future citizens to contribute to creative solutions to integration. This will be hosted by academics from both University of Glasgow and InHerit.
On Saturday 26 August, the central point will be the challenges of integration, for which , representatives from The Well; Multi-Cultural Resource Centre, and many more will be speaking over the weekend on the subject. Information stalls will be in available so visitors can learn how to get involved with the community groups in attendance. Following this, the Govanhill Carnival will take place from 2pm-5pm.
To conclude the Glasgow Unity Festival on Sunday 27 August, the day will be all about the future of unity in the city. Speakers will include schools liaison partners Clare Harker, Refuweegee founder Selina Hales and Patrick Harvie MSP, co-convener of the Scottish Green Party. Milk Cafe and Inhouse will be providing 100+ free free meals at lunch time.
On the night of Sunday 27 August, Inhouse and Govanhill Baths present Roots Rock Reggae Against Racism, which will see headliners Aswad take to the stage, with tickets from £25. On Monday 28, the Rock Against Racism show will take place on its anniversary, with performances from Black Grape and Colonel Mustard and the Dijon Five, with tickets priced at £35. Inhouse are fresh from hosting the successful Glasgow Games: Cirque Du Southside at the Arena and are thrilled to be bringing another weekend of excitement to the heart of Glasgow’s Southside. Their tearoom, The Arena Cafe, will be open for refreshments throughout the weekend’s festivities.
The Glasgow Unity Festival will take place in the Queen’s Park Arena from 10am until 5.30pm on Friday 25, 11am to 5.30pm on Saturday 26, 11am to 3pm on Sunday 27 and is a free, non-ticketed event which is open to all communities.
