Jazzie B explains, “You always get a lively crowd in Glasgow. It’s a city that knows how to party and the Soul II Soul Collective loved the Glasgow gigs back in the day.”
Jazzie B recently played in Glasgow opening for Chaka Khan at Kelvingrove Bandstand as part of this year’s Summer Sessions.
Jazzie reflects, “I know how much this city loves its music. As soon as we knew that we were going back out on the road with a Soul ll Soul tour, Glasgow was going on the list.
“Carol and I will be bringing a full 11-piece band of backing vocalists and a string section. We will be playing the old favourites ‘Back to Life’, ‘Keep on Movin’ and a selection from the other albums. The old philosophy is still the same now as it was back in the day - a happy face and a thumping bass for a lovin' race.”
Soul ll Soul is currently enjoying a second meteoric rise due to a recent documentary, “From Dole to Soul”. The documentary followed Jazzie B’s journey into the spotlight in the 80’s. Described as the unlikely poster boy for Thatcher’s Britain. The dreadlocked head of a Reggae Sound System, Jazzie B grew his Soul II Soul sound system into a global brand with help from the government’s Enterprise Allowance Scheme.
Jazzie looked back on how he built a hugely successful collective when 80’s Britain was focussed on get rich quick stock market boom schemes, set against a background of riots and chronic unemployment. As a young successful, black British musician, he created the first black British street style, and helped forge a British multicultural identity for the younger generations through clothes, music and art.
He has since been credited with an OBE and he was awarded the first Inspiration award at the Ivor Novell Awards for being "a pioneer" and acknowledged as "the man who gave black British music a soul of its own".
