Work starts this Tuesday (7 July 2020) to create new pop-up cycle lanes between Drumchapel and Knightswood as part of our Spaces for People programme, which is providing additional space for physical distancing to protect public health and suppress a resurgence of COVID-19.
These temporary cycle lanes with light segregation in place where possible (red and white traffic wands), will stretch for 2km in each direction along Great Western Road, between Duntreath Avenue and Lincoln Avenue.
This new route will increase the practicality and attractiveness of active travel for both leisure and commuting, and will be provided for by reallocating the inside lane (east and westbound) on Great Western Road from general traffic use and dedicating this to active travel.
Access to properties and private driveways will be maintained at all times.
These new lanes follow work to install a westbound pop-up cycle lane on the Broomielaw between Saltmarket and the Clyde Arc, and work ongoing to create cycle lanes in both directions on London Road between Macduff Street and Kirkpatrick Street.
The north east of the city is also set to benefit from new temporary cycle lanes, with plans for Cumbernauld Road - with light segregation, along a key section of the Glasgow to Cumbernauld Cycle Route.
It is anticipated that this route will boost the uptake of active travel in the community for both leisure and commuting, linking the new railway station at Robroyston and the surrounding area to Provanmill Road. Design work is already underway, looking at Provanmill Road and Royston Road as future phases, to provide a complete link to the city centre.
Further information will be provided as soon as possible.
Supported by £3.5m funding from the Scottish Government and administered by Sustrans Scotland, Spaces for People will see temporary infrastructure measures introduced across Glasgow to provide extra space for people to walk, wheel or cycle as COVID-19 restrictions remain in place.
Short-term measures across our city centres and neighbourhoods will see footways widened at pinch points to ease pedestrian movement and make it easier to access businesses, community facilities and public transport hubs. Consideration will also be given to the positioning of temporary strategic cycling routes to highlight cycling as an attractive, viable and long term commuting choice.
If you have suggestions for public spaces in Glasgow where it is difficult to maintain physical distancing whilst out walking, cycling and wheeling, please share these on our Commonplace Mapping Tool. In collaboration with Sustrans Scotland, this interactive platform enables users to highlight areas across the city centre and neighbourhoods, where emergency temporary measures such as pavement widening and new cycle lanes could be introduced to help people maintain physical distancing and suppress a resurgence of the virus.
