Entitled 10 Reasons Not to Make A Movie, the mockumentary about the trials and tribulations of a film production where everything goes wrong is, Campbell hopes, going to be a welcome and uproariously funny addition to the film festival circuit in 2021 and Scottish cinema as a whole.
With a trailer released online on the 5th of March, the film has already built up a steady fan following on social media, with cinema goers and fans of home-based productions excited by the wry comedy and originality found in the teaser’s clips.
Much of the principal photography for 10 Reasons was shot in Linwood, Govan, Erskine, and Glasgow’s West End. The film navigates through recognisable sites of the city and set pieces shot in streets local residents are sure to recognise.
Campbell describes shooting on his home turf as: “the absolute proof we live on the friendliest place on the planet. Everybody I reached out to in the community was more willing to lend a hand out of their own time and pocket. Shooting around places where I’d grown up reminded me how important the local spirit is in and around Greater Glasgow, with people you barley know all chipping in just for the sake of helping someone with a vision they’ve tried so hard to make true”.
Campbell left high school in Renfrew to take place on the University of Glasgow’s prestigious law course, but soon followed his heart and matriculated to study on their film and television course instead. From there he enlisted, collected and collated a large group of budding film-makers, actors, musicians, and other creators to help be a part of the script he had first envisioned upon beginning his education in cinema.
He said of the film-making process: “I think it’s a film that means so much to so many people. Whether it’s good or bad (let’s hope not!), it was an experience that brought a really tremendous amount of people working together and learning. So many of our crew have graduated and are on the ladder working for companies like BBC and Channel 4, and knowing that all these bright people gave up so much of their time on the road to bigger things later on makes it feel all the more special”.
Campbell intends to see the film circulated throughout the UK’s festival circuit with hopes of it garnering some critical favour, further exposure, and any additional reward which would go towards Campbell and Monkey Box’s next outing.
