Founder Jenny Drew of Sew Confident Glasgow and Franchisee Sandra Cassidy of Sew Confident Dundee are rallying their communities together to help families facing a tough winter to keep warm and get through the cold months ahead. Putting their crafting skills to good use, the Sew Confident teams and their communities of helpers are knitting and crocheting gloves, hats and scarves to be distributed along with food packages within the Dundee and Glasgow food banks.
Sew Confident’s online community of over 3,000 members have already been approached to get involved along with a number of care homes with crafty residents but now the team are hoping to reach new audiences and appeal for more help. For more information on how to get involved, please visit www.facebook.com/Sewconfidentltd. The Dundee and Glasgow Sew Confident studios will be accepting donations between 14th - 27th of November before handing all into the food banks on the 1st of December.
Jenny Drew, Founder and Franchisor of Sew Confident, said: “The energy crisis is impacting so many people. It got me thinking about those the hardest hit by the rising cost of living and how we could help. By calling on our community, we’re putting our skills and the skills we’ve taught so many people over the years, to the best use possible. We’re hoping to get as many volunteers as possible and donations from any knitters who have existing creations not being used. We’ve never been shy of getting involved in charitable, community projects at Sew Confident, so I saw this as another opportunity to help and I can’t wait to see how many items we can donate.”
Sandra is hoping to appeal to anyone with knitting experience in Dundee and Tayside to get involved.
Sandra said: “We’re hoping to pull together and donate as many items as possible but our goal is to donate 50 items to the Dundee and Angus Food Bank by December 1st. It feels like the cold has set in a lot earlier this year and as energy prices soar, so many households are anticipating a challenging Winter ahead. I always try to do my bit to help where possible so I’m so happy to be helping Dundee and Angus food bank and putting my knitting skills to work.
We recently helped NHS Tayside and the Palliative care team who were in desperate need of new Syringe Driver bags for patients and when I put it out to my Facebook group, Sew Confident Dundee’s Online Community, I had an influx of helpers eager to get involved. I’m hoping to have the same response to this project. We’re appealing to anyone who has knitting/crocheting experience to get involved and have even reached out to care homes to involve any elderly folk with idle hands.”
Ken Linton, the Manager at Dundee and Angus Food Bank, said: “With the current financial climate and energy crisis, it’s clear that hunger isn’t the only hardship our clients are facing. We were thrilled to hear that Sandra wanted to help ahead of the cold months and will be happy to pass her donations on to our clients in the months ahead, who I’m sure will be very grateful.”
Shona Simm, Project Manager at Glasgow NW Foodbank, said: “With the energy crisis setting in, this Winter is going to be even more tough for our clients, with many unable to heat their homes. As a result, we’ve seen a huge increase in visitors to our foodbank in the past few months and with some local councils having to consider opening up warm spaces as a lifeline, the problem is obviously very serious. We’re looking forward to accepting donations from the Sew Confident community that will really help our clients ahead of the cold months.”
