Scottish Ballet creates a brand new wee version of the big ballet

Scottish Ballet's Wee Nutcracker is coming to Tramway this December. The beloved festive ballet, The Nutcracker, has been specially adapted for wee ones aged 5+ and their families!

Scottish Ballet’s new production Wee Nutcracker is coming to Glasgow's Tramway, which is home to Scottish Ballet HQ, this December. Enchanting characters will be performed by Scottish Ballet dancers in this specially adapted shortened version of the beloved festive ballet, perfect for children aged 5+ and their families who are looking to experience their first ballet together.

Scottish Ballet Associate Choreographer Nicholas Shoesmith has contributed new choreography to the existing work, and award-winning children’s theatre specialist Robert Evans has contributed to the story-telling, creating a magical show that brings the classic tale to life through delightful movement and engaging storytelling.

Wee Nutcracker will feature a live pianist and a recording of the full Scottish Ballet orchestra playing the spectacular Tchaikovsky score. Audiences can expect engaging storytelling in an exciting adventure through the Land of Sweets.

The Wee Nutcracker tour runs through December with 16 performances from 12-22 December 2025 at Glasgow’s Tramway. It follows the opening of full-length winter production The Snow Queen, which will tour Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Inverness with dates between November 2025 - January 2026.

Christopher Hampson, Artistic Director/CEO of Scottish Ballet said: “I’m delighted to be bringing Wee Nutcracker to Tramway to inspire young children and families with the magic of dance.”

Nicholas Shoesmith, Associate Choreographer at Scottish Ballet, said: “It's so exciting to be creating a festive treat for a new, younger audience. We’re going to create a magical experience for children, and hope to encourage them to continue going to the theatre, maybe even inspire them to want to become dancers themselves!”
