Girls Rock Glasgow just wrapped their biggest Summer School to date, bringing together 60 young people and over 70 volunteers for 9 days of fun, creativity and pure musical joy - all leading up to yesterday’s sold-out graduation showcase at The Art School, Glasgow.
The grassroot organisation aims to encourage young participants to take up space, find their voice and most importantly make noise. Girls Rock Glasgow offers a glimpse into the future. Outspoken young girls making music, free of restriction and conventional narratives.
Over the course of 9 days, the participants formed bands, wrote an original song, learnt their instruments (many for the first time!), and yesterday they performed live on stage in front of friends, family, and supporters. It’s equal parts punk spirit, DIY creativity, and raw joy- an inspiring antidote to the typical narratives around who gets to make noise in music.
The showcase debuted 12 brand new bands, comprised of the 8 to 16 year old attendees with original music - everything from classic angry punk anthems and blistering guitar solos to songs about a depressed celery stick named Susan. The Girls Rock Glasgow showcase had it all.
Rock School took place at Glasgow University’s QMU, where participants dove into a whirlwind of instrument lessons, Rock Herstory, screen printing, zine-making, music journalism and more. With the help of an incredible volunteer crew, these future rockstars built bands from scratch and crafted original music that brought the house down.
“Honestly? It felt like a music festival thrown by the coolest kids in Glasgow,”
said GRG Co-Director Alice Black. A musician herself, Alice co-leads the camp alongside fellow powerhouse Beth Black.
Beth added, “There were tears, there was joy - watching 8-year-olds and 16-year-olds alike find their voice on stage? That’s what this is all about.”
The 2025 Graduation Showcase raised over £3000 through tickets, merch and donations - money that will fund next year’s Summer Rock School, mentoring, and year-round programming.
