This year’s competition was the biggest yet, with more than 70,000 votes cast – and Baxter secured over 43,000 votes, making him the clear winner.
He will now proudly represent Beatson Cancer Charity across the next year, spreading love and positivity at key events, including Off the Beatson Track and Santa Dash.
Baxter, the cockapoo, lives in Paisley with his owners, Natalie and Ross Bytheway, who have a deep personal connection to The Beatson. Both Natalie’s dad and Ross’s mum received treatment at The Beatson, and Ross himself underwent treatment for testicular cancer last year.
Ross explained: “I was diagnosed in April 2023 after a routine blood test and quickly started treatment. It was a challenging time, but having Baxter by our side brought so much light into our lives. When I was feeling unwell, he just seemed to know – he’d be calmer, gentle, and never left my side. He gave us that silent companionship we needed, and he helped me get out the house for walks during recovery, which made such a difference.”
Natalie added: “We’re completely obsessed with him – he’s happy, loving and a bit nuts! He adores everyone, apart from cats, and always seems to know exactly what you need. When Ross was in hospital, Baxter stayed with my mum and just instinctively adapted. It made life so much easier for all of us. Entering him into the Ambassadog competition felt like the perfect way to give back to Beatson Cancer Charity and to celebrate everything Baxter has done for us.”
Now stepping into the Ambassadog role, Baxter will attend Beatson Cancer Charity events, take part in photoshoots, and help raise awareness of the vital work the charity does.
A Beatson Cancer Charity spokesperson said: “We’re delighted to announce Baxter as our Ambassadog for 2025/26. His story with Natalie and Ross shows just how powerful the bond between people and their dogs can be, especially during the toughest times. We want to thank everyone who entered their wonderful dogs – every story was so special. With more than 70,000 votes cast this year, the support has been incredible. Baxter will be a fantastic representative for the Beatson, and we can’t wait for everyone to meet him.”
Supporters can also get involved by purchasing Beatson Cancer Charity tartan dog accessories from the charity’s online shop, helping dogs like Baxter spread awareness while supporting families affected by cancer.
