Tracey Howe, 61, from Bearsden, has been walking an average of 17 miles a day since November 2024, covering more than 5,000 miles. Known as Tracey’s Trek, the challenge is raising money for Beatson Cancer Charity and four other organisations that supported her family after her wife, Angela, was diagnosed with a brain tumour and later blood cancer. Angela died in 2023 aged 58.
On Sunday 5th October, Tracey will pause her trek to join thousands of runners in Glasgow for the Great Scottish Run half marathon, alongside her son Daniel (24).
Tracey said: “I’ve not been able to train properly because I’ve been walking every day, but I know I can manage the distance. For me, the Great Scottish Run is another chance to raise awareness of the charities I’m supporting, especially Beatson Cancer Charity, who cared for Angela. I’m proud to be doing it with my son by my side.”
She added: “When I started this trek in the middle of winter, I wasn’t in a good place mentally. Walking has given me a way to process my grief, step by step, while keeping Angela’s memory alive. Taking part in the Great Scottish Run feels like another milestone in this journey and a way to celebrate how far we’ve come.”
Tracey has already raised over £50,000 towards her £100,000 target. Donations will go to Beatson Cancer Charity, Marie Curie, Breast Cancer Now, CoppaFeel! and Brain Trust.
Maisie McCormick, Community Fundraising Manager at Beatson Cancer Charity, said: “Tracey has already achieved something extraordinary with her 5,000-mile trek, and now she’s adding the Great Scottish Run into the mix. It’s an incredible commitment in memory of Angela, and we are so grateful for her continued support.”
Ashley Thomson, Head of Fundraising, Marie Curie Scotland, said: “We are continually in awe of Tracey’s mammoth fundraising challenge – and we can’t thank her enough for the money she has raised for Marie Curie along the way. What she has achieved in Angela’s memory has been incredible and we can’t wait to meet her at the finish line.”
Zsuzsi Kiss, Individual Giving Manager at CoppaFeel!, said: “We are truly grateful for Tracey's phenomenal support. Her unwavering dedication and tireless commitment are nothing short of inspiring. We wish her the very best of luck with the Great Scottish Run and the final stretch of her incredible 5,000-mile trek in loving memory of Angela.”
Claire Pulford, Associate Director of Relationship Fundraising and Events at Breast Cancer Now said: “A huge thank you to Tracey for her incredible fundraising efforts in memory of Angela. Having raised an incredible amount for charities through her 5,000-mile trek, Tracey's a true inspiration now taking on the AJ Bell Great Scottish Run and we wish her the best of luck! We're so grateful for the generous donation we're receiving through her remarkable fundraising which will help us to go further, faster for people affected by breast cancer as we strive to realise our bold ambition that by 2050 everyone with breast cancer will live and live well.”
Will Jones, CEO of Brain Trust, said: “Tracey is a remarkable force, she is an inspiration to the brain tumour community that we support here at brainstrust. We are all moved to greater action as she takes on the Great Scottish Run with the same tenacity and strength that have defined her journey over the last 4500 miles on foot. Tracey knows first-hand the challenges faced by those living with and caring for people with a brain tumour, and it is this experience that fuels her determination. Her courage is an inspiration to us all, showing what is possible when love, grit and purpose come together.”
Tracey will complete her trek on Friday 31st October at 10am, finishing in Glasgow at the Beatson West Of Scotland Cancer Centre on Halloween.
